Ruines

Rachael Woodson, Paper Cuts

Paper Cuts was inspired by Ruines, poems written by French writer Perrine Le Querrec about the tumultuous relationship between surrealist artists Unica Zürn and Hans Bellmer. She decided to write the piece after visiting their grave at Père Lachaise Cemetery, where Bellmer was buried next to Zürn five years after her suicide. After photographing Perrine for a series on contemporary women poets, I read Ruines, and had the idea to make this video. It joins the voice of the poet reading Ruines and the synchronized turning of its pages at Zürn and Bellmer’s grave.
